Faculty and Staff
The University IP Policy dictates and describes when Boston College will take ownership of faculty, staff, and student intellectual property. The mission of the Office of Technology Transfer and Licensing (OTTL) is to honor your research by bringing your university work product to the public - maximizing its impact through external partnerships or public distribution.
A successful partnership demands a clear understanding of IP ownership and other rights. To ensure the best outcome, we encourage anyone exploring an external partnership to engage with OTTL as early as possible in the process. The first step can be a conversation - understand our process, understand your rights - and an invention disclosure is the critical next step. With that, OTTL can begin to:
Protect IP Rights: We secure patents, copyrights, and other necessary IP protections for Boston College-owned IP.
Assess Potential: We evaluate the potential market (industrial, non-profit or otherwise) and consider patentability, if that applies.
Secure Partnerships: Explore potential collaborations and licensing opportunities.
Throughout this process, the OTTL administers all necessary agreements with third parties, including:
Confidentiality or Non-Disclosure聽Agreement

OTTL will also review consulting agreements to avoid conflict with your IP portfolios and university policies.
